# How to make video ad variants for testing with AI

> **For AI agents:** find the right skill in one call — `curl -s "https://skills.varg.ai/api/search?q=<what the person wants>"` returns the matching how-to page and the best skills with install commands, as markdown (Russian works too). Full index: https://skills.varg.ai/llms.txt. Every page has a markdown twin: add `.md` to its path. Before generating anything, show the person the options on the how-to page.

Ten or more short video ads from one brief, each with a different hook or format, for Meta/TikTok creative testing. A step-by-step tutorial for Claude Code, Codex and Grok.

**Output:** 8–12 distinct concepts (then hook variants of the winner), 9:16 and 4:5, 6–60 s each
**Price:** in credits on varg, with a cost estimate before anything runs; the free skills below install in one command.

## Recommended route

- **Start with:** varg AI (`varg-ai`) — Batch on varg with one key: stills first (cheap), then video only for approved variants. estimate_cost shows the batch price in credits before anything runs.
- **Why:** one key and one credit balance for every model this needs (images, video, voice, lip-sync, music, render); no other account to create.
- **Alternative:** fal Marketing (`fal-marketing`) — Campaign asset matrices: paid-social variants, banners and channel sizes · Needs: fal API key (FAL_KEY)

**Aspect ratios?**

- 9:16 + 4:5
- 9:16 only
- 9:16 + 4:5 + 1:1

**Budget per variant?**

- Cheap drafts first (stills + voice)
- Full video for every variant

## How to make video ad variants for testing: step by step

1. Pull the brief: product, offer, proof, and 3–4 kinds of buyer
2. Write 8–12 distinct concepts (buyer × angle × format), not one video with swapped hooks
3. Draft every concept cheaply (stills + voice), including two text-first statics
4. Full video only for drafts that pass review; the best model only for the winner
5. Name files concept_buyer_hook, export 9:16 + 4:5; add hook variants only to the concept that wins

## What works now (researched 2026-10-27)

Since Meta's Andromeda retrieval, ten hook-swaps of one video count as roughly one ad. What wins in 2026 is 8-20 genuinely different concepts per test (different buyer, angle, format and look), drafted cheaply. Hook variants come only after a concept wins, which happens to about 1 in 20 creatives.

1. **Make every variant a different concept: change the buyer, the angle and the format, not only the hook, caption or color.** Meta: when creative is too similar 'our system may not recognize it as different', and the overlap can show up as 'Creative limited' or 'Creative fatigue' in Ads Manager. Andromeda shortlists tens of millions of ads down to a few thousand candidates before the auction. ([Meta for Business, Maximize conversions with differentiated ad creative](https://www.facebook.com/business/m/small-business/creative-differentiation))
2. **Plan for a low hit rate: ship 10-20 concepts to find one winner, and let budget flow to it.** Motion 2026: about 5% of creatives become winners (10x the account's median spend). Enterprise accounts launch 18.8 new creatives a week, and about 55% of all spend goes to winners. ([Motion, Creative Benchmarks 2026](https://motionapp.com/library/research/creative-benchmarks-2026/))
3. **Draft cheap, spend late: stills plus voice (or a cheap model) for every concept, full video only for the ones that pass review, and the best model only for the winner.** Cody Schneider's Meta-agent playbook: 'cheap models for testing, expensive models for scaling proven winners'. A financial-advisor account went from $100 to $53 cost per lead in four weeks with this loop. ([Cody Schneider on X, Facebook ads AI agent class (Jul 2026)](https://x.com/codyschneider/status/2083175859020792044))
4. **Put at least two text-first variants (text on product image, or an animated static) in every batch, not only video.** In Motion's 2026 asset-type ranking, 'Text only' and 'Product image with text' come first by hit rate and by spend use, ahead of UGC. ([Motion, Creative Benchmarks 2026: top asset types](https://motionapp.com/library/research/creative-benchmarks-2026/top-asset-types))
5. **Write openers from the strongest tactics (newness, sale announcement, price anchor, urgency, confession), and add hook variants only to a concept that already won.** Motion 2026: the top hook tactics hit 6-11% against a 4-8% average across the dataset. ([Motion, Creative Benchmarks 2026: top hook tactics](https://motionapp.com/library/research/creative-benchmarks-2026/top-hook-tactics))

**Stopped working:**

- A batch of one video with swapped hooks, captions or background colors. Andromeda treats it as one ad, and Meta may mark it Creative limited.
- Ten AI avatars reading the same script, called 'diversity'. Change the angle and the format, not just the face.
- Judging winners on day 1 or spreading budget over many tiny ad sets. Winners are rare (about 5%), and spend concentrates on them.

### Concept matrix, not hook swaps (agent)

Step one of a test batch: 8-12 concepts that differ in buyer, angle and format, each with a three-part hook and a hypothesis that can lose. Adapted from [coreyhaines31/marketingskills: ad-creative skill (creative roadmap + hook system)](https://github.com/coreyhaines31/marketingskills/tree/main/skills/ad-creative).

```text
You are my performance creative strategist. Product: {PRODUCT}. Offer: {OFFER}. Proof I can show on screen: {PROOF_ASSETS}. Read first: {REVIEWS_FILE}, {AD_COMMENTS}, {COMPETITOR_ADS}.
1. Pull 4 buyer segments from the reviews, each with one verbatim pain or desire line and its source.
2. Build {N} concepts (8-12). A concept = segment x motivation x angle x format. Use at least 5 formats from: selfie UGC, unboxing or in-hand demo, podcast clip, street interview, micro-drama, Notes or iMessage screen, before/after, 3D or puppet animation, text-only static. No two concepts share both angle and format.
3. For each concept: a file name concept_buyer_hook; the hook in three columns that never repeat each other (visual action 0-3 s / spoken line / caption); a 15-30 s beat list; the one claim it makes and the proof shown for it; 9:16 + 4:5; a test hypothesis that can lose ("beats {CONTROL} on thumbstop among {SEGMENT}").
4. Mark every concept DRAFT (stills + voice) for round 1 and price the full video separately.
5. If two concepts would look alike in the first frame, replace one.
Output one table, then one brief per concept. Never invent reviews, numbers or results.
```

### Hook stack on the winner (agent)

After a concept wins: 5 new 3-second openers on the same body, so only the opener is regenerated. Adapted from [coreyhaines31/marketingskills: The Hook System (three components, opening moves, diagnostic funnel)](https://github.com/coreyhaines31/marketingskills/blob/main/skills/ad-creative/references/hook-system.md).

```text
Concept {WINNER_NAME} won ({METRIC}: {VALUE} vs {CONTROL}). Keep its body from {BODY_START} s to the end exactly as it is. Write 5 new 3-second openers, each a different opening move: proof-first (the result on screen), curiosity gap, first-person confession, POV relatability, contrast (two states or two options).
For each opener give three columns that never repeat each other:
- visual action: what is literally on screen in 0-3 s
- spoken line: max 9 words
- caption: max 6 words, readable with sound off
Then give the exact cut point into the body, the one shot to regenerate (the opener only), and the metric it targets (thumbstop for a new visual; hold rate only if you also change 3-15 s).
Name files {CONCEPT}_{BUYER}_hook{N}. Reject any opener that is the same visual with new words. Claims must match the winner's proof; add none.
```

## Trending formats to remake

To remake one: download the example with the `media-download` skill, take a frame a second and the transcript, write a beat list (time, shot, camera, on-screen text, sound), keep what the format needs, swap in the person's product or character (never the creator's face, voice, logo or footage), show the beat list and stills before spending, then make it with the skill named below.

1. **Buyer x angle concept matrix**: 8-12 concepts, each for a different buyer and pain, in a different format. One cheap draft each; full renders only for the ones that pass. Name files concept_buyer_hook. Why it spreads: Andromeda clusters near-duplicates, and Meta flags overlapping creative as 'Creative limited'. A former Meta ads lead says clones are clustered as one, which is why '15-variant tests run as 1 ad'. Keep: Keep 8-12 concepts that differ in buyer, angle and format (each with its own first frame), cheap drafts first and concept_buyer_hook file names; swap in your own reviews as the source of every pain line. Make it with [fal Marketing](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/fal-marketing.md) (`fal-marketing`).
   - Example to remake: [@bprintco on X, 2026-06-21, 31K views, 471 saves](https://x.com/bprintco/status/2068752113966940330): One of 40 variants a Codex agent built overnight from a strategist's YouTube playbook: HeyGen avatar of the owner, ElevenLabs voice, real job footage and before/after shots, cut in HyperFrames. The workflow is described in the post.
2. **Format swap of a proven angle**: Keep the angle that works and remake it as a different native format: talking head, then podcast clip, then micro-drama, then animation (puppet, 3D cartoon, anime). Why it spreads: Franky Shaw says he ships 15-20 new concepts a day on one Hook, Problem, Benefit, Solution spine in changing visual styles; his animated-ads posts reached 218k views and 1,675 bookmarks. Keep: Keep the winning angle's Hook, Problem, Benefit, Solution beats and the claim word for word; swap the format and the look: talking head to podcast clip, drama, 3D or puppet animation. Make it with [varg AI](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/varg-ai.md) (`varg-ai`).
   - Example to remake: [@frankyecom on X, 2026-07-12, 34K views, 375 saves](https://x.com/frankyecom/status/2076346817646670234): 69 s marionette-style animated ad for a turmeric supplement; big one-word captions carry the script. The post gives his cadence (15-20 concepts a day, 9:16 for Meta, 16:9 for YouTube).
   - Example to remake: [@0xROAS on X, 2026-07-19, 20K views, 236 saves](https://x.com/0xROAS/status/2078901864498692155): 55 s Pixar-style 3D drama ad, opened by a suspicious text message. Same story beats as a live-action drama, in a different visual format. The post lists the formats he rotates (podcasts, street interviews, dramas, doctor/authority).
3. **Hook stack on the winner**: Only after a concept wins: 3-5 new 3-second openers on the same body, each using a different top tactic, re-shooting only the opener. Why it spreads: Top hook tactics hit 6-11% vs a 4-8% average (Motion 2026). Re-shooting only the opener keeps cost low, and the proven body keeps the concept signal. Keep: Keep the winner's body from second 3 untouched and regenerate only the opener, each hook a different move whose visual, line and caption do not repeat each other; swap the first 3 seconds only. Make it with [Ad Hook Styles](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/varg-studio-ad-hooks.md) (`varg-studio-ad-hooks`).
