# How to add voiceover and music to a video with AI

> **For AI agents:** find the right skill in one call — `curl -s "https://skills.varg.ai/api/search?q=<what the person wants>"` returns the matching how-to page and the best skills with install commands, as markdown (Russian works too). Full index: https://skills.varg.ai/llms.txt. Every page has a markdown twin: add `.md` to its path. Before generating anything, show the person the options on the how-to page.

A professional voiceover and a fitting music bed added to your video or screen recording. A step-by-step tutorial for Claude Code, Codex and Grok.

**Output:** The video with voice and music mixed
**Price:** in credits on varg, with a cost estimate before anything runs; the free skills below install in one command.

## Recommended route

- **Start with:** varg AI (`varg-ai`) — On varg, one key: voice on [`eleven_v4`](https://varg.ai/models/eleven_v4.md) (or [`eleven_v4_turbo`](https://varg.ai/models/eleven_v4_turbo.md) for drafts, voice clones supported) and music on [`eleven_music`](https://varg.ai/models/eleven_music.md); the varg `ffmpeg` tool mixes them with ducking. No separate ElevenLabs account.
- **Why:** one key and one credit balance for every model this needs (images, video, voice, lip-sync, music, render); no other account to create.
- **Alternative:** ElevenLabs Text to Speech (`elevenlabs-text-to-speech`) — Natural voiceover in 90+ languages · Needs: ElevenLabs API key (ELEVENLABS_API_KEY)

- Slow and calm

**Music?**

- Lo-fi
- Corporate upbeat

## How to add voiceover and music to a video: step by step

1. Write to the clock: about 165 words a minute for an explainer
2. Generate 4 takes, regenerate only the weak lines, trim pauses over 0.28 s
3. Get word timestamps; fire visuals and captions on the words
4. Duck the music 7–9 dB under the voice, SFX under the voice, master to −14 LUFS / −2 dBTP
5. Use music you can license, and disclose AI music when it is the focus

## What works now (researched 2026-10-27)

Voice first, picture second: the most-saved 2026 prompts generate the voice with word timestamps, fire every visual on its word, read at about 165 words per minute and sit the music 7-9 dB under the voice at -14 LUFS. Faceless narrated channels still get views, but YouTube removes monetisation from template-made, mass-produced narration.

1. **Write to the clock: about 165 words per minute for an explainer, 0.24 s between sentences, a short beat before the reveal. If the voice is short, tighten the picture; never pad the voice.** From a narrated-explainer prompt saved 5,122 times (236k views): 'Never pad the voice to fit the visuals, tighten the read instead.' ([Finn (@finnardley), narrated explainer prompt (Oct 2026)](https://x.com/finnardley/status/2114305886420086817))
2. **Make 4 takes of the whole script, regenerate only the weak line, and cut every pause longer than 0.28 s down to 0.2 s.** Part of a launch-film prompt saved 1,364 times on 41k views; it also notes '[warmly] opener comes out whispered and [excited] sounds fake'. ([zero (@twoclipping), voice-led launch film prompt (Oct 2026)](https://x.com/twoclipping/status/2106526359589675085))
3. **Use ElevenLabs v3/v4 tags sparingly and matched to the voice; use ellipses for pauses and caps for stress; keep speed between 0.7 and 1.2; no SSML break tags.** ElevenLabs: 'Eleven v4 and Eleven v3 do not support SSML break tags'; 'a meditative voice shouldn't shout'; playful tags misfire on serious voices. ([ElevenLabs docs, prompting Eleven v3/v4](https://elevenlabs.io/docs/best-practices/prompting/eleven-v3))
4. **Duck the music so the voice sits about 7-9 dB above it in the speech band (300 Hz-4 kHz), keep sound effects 4-10 dB under the voice, and master to -14 LUFS with about -2 dB true peak.** Both top prompts use these numbers: music 7 dB under the voice and -14 LUFS / -2.2 dBTP (Finn); a 3-band sidechain until the voice is about 9 dB over the music between 300 Hz and 4 kHz (zero). Broadcast guidance asks for 16-23 LU between voice-over and background. ([Finn (@finnardley), narrated explainer prompt (Oct 2026)](https://x.com/finnardley/status/2114305886420086817))
5. **Use music you can license and say when it is AI: ElevenLabs Music is cleared for commercial use; free-tier Suno songs are not; disclose AI music when it is the main focus on YouTube.** After its Warner settlement Suno bars free-tier songs from commercial use and limits downloads to paid plans; YouTube lists AI-generated music as content that needs disclosure. Faceless channels also face YouTube's 'inauthentic content' rule. ([YouTube Help, Channel monetization policies (inauthentic content)](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/1311392))

**Stopped working:**

- Padding the voice or stretching pauses to fill the picture; tighten the read instead.
- Stacking emotion tags: '[excited]' tends to sound fake and playful tags misfire on serious voices; SSML breaks do nothing on v3/v4.
- The same voice, script shape and stock b-roll in every upload. YouTube can remove monetisation from the whole channel for 'mass-produced, generic, repetitive' content.

### Voice pass: takes, pause trim, word timing (agent)

Step one of any narrated video: the voice is made and timed first, then every caption and visual fires from its word table. Adapted from [zero (@twoclipping), voice-led launch-film prompt (Oct 2026)](https://x.com/twoclipping/status/2106526359589675085).

```text
Write the voiceover to the clock: {DURATION} s at about {WPM} words a minute (165 for an explainer), 0.24 s between sentences, a 0.36 s beat before the reveal. If the read runs long, tighten the script; never pad the voice.
Voice: eleven_v4, voice {VOICE_ID} ({VOICE_DESCRIPTION}), stability 0.5, similarity 0.75, speed between 0.9 and 1.1. Tags only where they suit the voice: [softly] on quiet lines, at most one [excited]; the opener gets no tag and a plain full stop. Ellipses for pauses, CAPS for the one stressed word, no SSML break tags.
Generate 4 takes of the whole script in one read and let me pick. If one line is off, regenerate only that line 4 times and splice the best into my take. Cut every pause over 0.28 s down to 0.2 s, then level each phrase 85% of the way to the median, changing gain only inside the pauses.
Word timings: cut the read at every pause of 100 ms or more, transcribe each chunk on its own and pin each chunk's first word to its measured onset (one whole-file pass puts words up to 0.5 s late). Write a word table; every caption and visual event reads from it.
```

### Music bed and mix under the voice (agent)

Step two: place the music and SFX against the timed voice and master for upload. Adapted from [zero (@twoclipping), voice-led launch-film prompt, sound section (Oct 2026)](https://x.com/twoclipping/status/2106526359589675085).

```text
Music: {TRACK_FILE or 'generate one'}. Start it so its drop lands on {KEY_LINE} and anchor the beat grid there; time its natural ending to land on the end card.
Duck it under the voice with a 3-band sidechain (lows 30%, mids 85%, air 55%; 0.3 s hold, 50 ms look-ahead, 0.5 s release), then move each phrase's mids until the voice sits about 9 dB over the music between 300 Hz and 4 kHz. Swell the music about 5 dB under the title.
SFX: one downloaded, licensed sound per event kind ({EVENT_KINDS}), each placed by its measured peak and trimmed around it (many are 4 s risers), 4-10 dB under the voice.
Master: fade the music on a dB curve under the end card; gain plus a limiter to -14 LUFS integrated and about -2 dB true peak.
Before showing me anything, report the voice-over-music ratio for every phrase, the integrated loudness and the true peak.
```

### Music bed prompt that leaves room for a voice (eleven_music)

Generate the bed when you have no track; answer all five questions (genre, mood, instruments, tempo, era) or the model picks the average. Adapted from [ElevenLabs docs, Music best practices](https://elevenlabs.io/docs/overview/capabilities/music/best-practices).

```text
{GENRE}, {BPM} BPM, in {KEY}, {MOOD} - {INSTRUMENTS}, {PRODUCTION_WORDS e.g. bone-dry drums, warm analog glue, soft sidechained pads}, {ERA}. Instrumental only. {LENGTH} seconds.
Start with just {INTRO_LAYER}; bring in {SECOND_LAYER} after {N} bars; the full arrangement lands at {DROP_SECONDS} seconds; pull back to just {BREAKDOWN_LAYER} at {BREAK_SECONDS} seconds; end on one clean final chord at {LENGTH} seconds.
Keep it under a speaking voice: no lead melody, no vocal chops, no busy hi-hats.
```

## Trending formats to remake

To remake one: download the example with the `media-download` skill, take a frame a second and the transcript, write a beat list (time, shot, camera, on-screen text, sound), keep what the format needs, swap in the person's product or character (never the creator's face, voice, logo or footage), show the beat list and stills before spending, then make it with the skill named below.

1. **Voice-led launch film with typed captions**: A short square film where every caption types in at the moment it is spoken, the music drop lands on the key line, and the music ducks under the voice. Why it spreads: The prompt was saved 1,364 times on 41k views (ratio 2.0): people want the exact voice and mix recipe. Keep: Keep the 9-line script shape, captions typed word by word at the moment they are spoken, the music drop on the key verb line and the voice about 9 dB over the music. Swap the product, voice and song. Make it with [HyperFrames](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/hyperframes.md) (`hyperframes`).
   - A shared prompt for this format: https://x.com/twoclipping/status/2106526359589675085
   - Example to remake: [@twoclipping on X, 2026-10-03, 41K views, 1K saves](https://x.com/twoclipping/status/2106526359589675085): Full prompt shared: 9-line script shape, eleven_v4 voice, 4 takes, pause trimming, Whisper per-chunk word timing, 3-band sidechain ducking, -14 LUFS.
2. **Narrated explainer drawn in code**: A calm narrator explains one 'what if' or one idea while camera moves, counters and a small mascot fire on the narration's words, over a quiet music bed. Why it spreads: Finn's prompt: 236k views, 5,122 bookmarks in two days. goshenggo's Claude + HyperFrames show excerpt: 487 bookmarks on 37k views. Keep: Keep one 'what if' question read at about 165 wpm, every narration line triggering a camera move or transformation on its word, a small mascot reacting and music 7 dB under at -14 LUFS. Swap the topic and invent your own look instead of copying a studio's. No dedicated skill yet ([wanted](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/want-what-if-science-explainer.md)): build it with `varg-ai`.
   - A shared prompt for this format: https://x.com/finnardley/status/2114305886420086817
   - Example to remake: [@finnardley on X, 2026-10-25, 236K views, 5K saves](https://x.com/finnardley/status/2114305886420086817): Full prompt with the audio numbers (165 wpm, music 7 dB under, -14 LUFS). The look is borrowed from Kurzgesagt, so give your version its own style.
   - Example to remake: [@goshenggo on X, 2026-10-27, 37K views, 487 saves](https://x.com/goshenggo/status/2114927236335972357): Chinese narrated show made with Claude + HyperFrames. Tips in the post: lock the font before generating; use the built-in SFX library, ElevenLabs only when needed.
3. **Faceless narrated documentary**: A history or mystery story told by one narrator over generated stills that are animated after approval, with an ambient score. Why it spreads: Still a top-saved workflow (1,492 bookmarks on 104k views), but it is the format YouTube's inauthentic-content rule targets when it is templated. Keep: Keep one real person at the centre with checked facts, stills approved before animation, one calm narrator and an ambient score. Swap the story, and vary the script shape between uploads so the channel does not read as mass-produced. Make it with [Plain-Sight Explainer](https://skills.varg.ai/skills/hyperframes-vox-explainer.md) (`hyperframes-vox-explainer`).
   - Example to remake: [@seergioo_gil on X, 2026-09-12, 104K views, 1K saves](https://x.com/seergioo_gil/status/2098863910904287446): Story built around one real person with checked facts, ElevenLabs v3 narration, stills reviewed before animation. Made in the Calliope app the post promotes.
